Why do we like this?
On October 18, Brooklyn synth trio Class Actress dropped their latest album Rapprocher via Carpark. The threesome released an EP last year titled Journal of Ardency on the bassist from Grizzly Bear's label, which rocked much the same moves as this album but with a tinnier, more impoverished sound. A brightly layered production, Rapprocher is jam-packed with highly danceable tracks consisting of glittering synths, contemporary poppy beats, and stylized retro 80s glam -- all paired perfectly with frontwoman Elizabeth Harper's sultry voice.
"Weekend" is a sumptuous banger that desires to "Bring it On / Bring On the Weekend," a perfectly written anthem that surges with primetime TV accessibility. "Love Me Like You Used To" resembles early 80s electro, with iced-down synth action and imploring lyrical romanticism.
Considering it was recorded in the vocalist's apartment, Rapprocher's sound is colossal: deep bass pulses that could unarguably guide audiences onto dancefloors. "Prove Me Wrong" is a spectral track embodying decades of musical influence and propulsive splendor.
Unabashedly slick, Rapprocher is an electro-laden album full of lush beats oozing from every musical outlet being utilized. Harper's Madonna-like vibe complements the lush sound and brings something fresh to the party. Her collected vocals juxtaposed with harsh rhythms add a compelling stellar quality that many electro-pop bands strive for but rarely achieve.
