Talk about a throwback to the 1980s. Chromeo is a duo from Montreal that started out in hip-hop production, but ended up in glam rock, or whatever you call it these days.
Their recently released album, Business Casual, took me on a journey back in time with an enjoyable pop-like sound. I can't say I was much of a fan of the 80's music scene, but its retro re-ignition
has got me listening.
Recently on Indie Shuffle, I reviewed the group that originally sucked me into the 80s, SOLID GOLD, and the two are quite similar in influence, but quite different in execution.
Where Chromeo seems to have jumped back in time, taking a lot of its sound from that decade; SOLID GOLD seems to have brought it forward to today with a more modern electro-sound.
Chromeo reminds me of Duran Durn, synth-pop style, where SOLID GOLD's a take on George Michael... a more downtempo, tripped-out George Michael.
Whoever Chromeo may sound like, they have a unique taste of the past. It's taken some time for me to get use to their sound -- it happens when you're getting used to a new genre/style -- but they sure are growing on me.
