Chromatics return with "Shadow" as part of the wonderful ongoing Adult Swim singles series. For those who haven't been following, Adult Swim has teamed up with a diverse range of artists to release a free song each week for 19 consecutive weeks (hear them all here).
So far they've released tracks from Peaches, Danny Brown, Slayer, Skrillex, and more (I told you it was diverse), and we've still got the mighty DOOMSTARKS, Run The Jewels, and Flying Lotus to look forward to. Wow.
Chromatics' contribution "Shadow" is expansive and ambient, really drawing you in. The melody breathlessly glides through the growing rhythms, while each layer enters one at a time, stretching out each peak, each valley. A perfectly balanced soundscape, this is a gorgeous track – for every falsetto phrase there's a bulging bass drum, for every spindly synth, atmospheric strings soften the blow.
No, we still have absolutely no idea when Chromatics will release the mysterious Dear Tommy. It was supposed to come out at the start of the year. Johnny Jewel has stated that "Dear Tommy is the most rebellious record I’ve made," so whatever that means, let's hope that we get to hear it real soon.
