As of late my music library hasn't been getting me excited about new sounds like it has in the past. I've been fumbling through lots of alternative rock and even some progressive electronic stuff, but nothing was hitting that sweet spot.
Then I got a hold of CHRMSM's new album Sauna Music, and my eyes lit up—specifically the second track off the album, "Open Shift." The pulsating collage of speech fragments sewn together with wobbling static and reverb harkens to the ingenuity of Oneohtrix Point Never. I feel like I'm swimming through the back of someone's head, trailing past ideas and emotions left unspoken.
As you reach the halfway point of the track, resonant chord progressions begin creeping below a foreground of noise. The initial dissonance of the glitchy vocals suddenly dissipates into an ethereal web of sound.
It's so juicy, especially amid the rest of the album's predominately dreamy synth-based flow. For the complete ambient experience, I recommend you ingest the album in its entirety. Swallow it whole. You'll thank me later.
