Philly's Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege and Noah "Xaphoon Jones" Beresin, better known as
Chiddy Bang, have really blown up on the scene the past year, debuting their free LP,
The Swelly Express, in November of 2009. The duo released their EP,
The Preview, on iTunes on October 12. Other than the fact that the EP in entirety amounts to about a half hour, a lot of the tracks have already been heard, either from their mixtapes, single releases, or leaks. This was kind of disappointing considering I bought the dang thing without checking my iTunes for all the duplicates I had.
Chiddy never fails to bring clever lyrics and mainstreaming indie samples to the table, which I think hooks in a lot of their iPod-generation listeners. Take "Opposite of Adults" for example, which samples
MGMT's chart-topping "Kids." Once Chiddy sampled "Kids" into their track, the crowd went wild.
There's something about that electronic/hip-hop combination that hits hipsters like a brick and really gets people going. Chiddy Bang knows how to nail this. Have you ever been to a party where someone hasn't thrown Sam Adams, Shwayze, or more recently, Mac Miller on the speakers? This mash-up of genres is clearer than ever in
The Preview, sampling hits from artists such as
Passion Pit,
Sufjan Stevens, and others outside of the EP such as
Gorillaz, MGMT, Ellie Goulding, and
Hot Chip.
Even though
The Preview doesn't offer much new material, I think Chiddy Bang does. At only 20, Chiddy and Xaphoon have already done big things, catching a lot of attention.
The Preview can only shed promising light on their career as well as its prequel,
The Swelly Life, to drop next year. Just continuing what they started, I think it's safe to say we're going to see these two go off with a bang.
