When Charlie Hilton premiered "Funny Anyway" on Noisey, she also gave a statement describing the day it was recorded:
"... it was the middle of winter in New York, but the sun came out and shone through the studio. There was a peaceful and light feeling in the room -- I still feel it when I listen to the song."
Hilton's new single doesn't require a thorough listening to understand why she gets drawn back to that calm state. There's a warm comfort to her beguiling croons drifting on a pastoral acoustic and a murmuring cello (played by Yeasayer's Anand Wilder) that makes us feel as if we're at that recording session with her.
But the track is more than just a vicarious experience into the idyllic account. It also offers an insight into Hilton herself, who explained "Funny Anyway" communicates what it feels like to be her ("I don't have a mind / For anything / That I do / No / I don't know what's going on"). It's that personal and that intimate.
