Charles Bradley has always had a certain amount of "hurt" in his tunes. His voice crumbles as he sings about loss and sorrow, but on this new album, it feels even more real.
The Dap-Kings file in line behind Bradley perfectly, giving a blend of funk and emotion that makes Victim of Love beautiful. On this single, "Strictly Reserved For You," the rhythm line is slow and steady, with some nice breakdowns and backup vocals echoing the song title. What an awesome sound.
I always end up coming around on any Daptone record, but this one really hits you immediately.
