Perth native Catlips (Katie Campbell) is one of the more intriguing prospects I've come across recently, and her latest single "Fade" is currently getting itself deeply stuck in my brain. During her time off from playing keys in fellow upstart Kùcka's band, Campbell's been creating plenty of buzz on her own with her unique brand of pop music.
There's something incredibly effective about "Fade," with its thudding beat paving the way for her boundary-pushing arrangement. While the vocal altering is a little grating at times, it plays an important part in the soundscape as a whole, but the hyperactive synth-lines and percussion are the real winners here. I've found it very difficult to compare Catlips to anyone in particular, and for that alone she should be applauded.
There's definitely huge potential for this project, and I'm very much looking forward to hearing more from her. With Catlips' Casual EP is due out on March 6 via Pilerats records, it looks like I won't have to wait too long.
