Why do we like this?
Carter Tanton, formerly of Tulsa, honed his singer-songwriter chops playing in New York City subways. Listening to "Murderous Joy," the first single off of his upcoming solo release Free Clouds, I'm struck by the image of his lithe figure furiously strumming a guitar late at night in the cavernous echo of the underground. His voice would resound marvelously in such a setting -- it has the delicate, resounding strength of a taut guitar string.
Tanton will be touring with the War On Drugs this year, and I can hear similarities in the lilting quality of their songwriting. Tanton's sound leans decidedly more towards the folk, but a hint of psychedelia elevates him.
You can download "Murderous Joy" over on Pitchfork.
