I first fell in love with Calan Mai bka Jordan Lawrence on his simple and sweet folk track "Mountain Mountain." He's returned to steal my heart with his next single "Cup" off his upcoming EP This Isn't How You Get Home.
He incorporates a mix of folk and electronic production, coupling finger-picked acoustic guitars with smears of synth chords and reverberant percussion. Think Pink Ganter's remix of William Fitzsimmons with the vocal layers and storytelling skills of The Decemberists. Rad huh?
The array of ghostly vocals are contributions from producer Adam Lyons some international friends. Australia, England and Ireland are all represented, and each voice does their part to add to the message of the song: the feeling of being alone when surrounded by company.
Of the song, Lawrence says:
"'Cup' is about being alone. It’s about that last-ditch feeling of panic that sinks in when you lose a person – that sort of fight or flight instinct that says ‘don’t let them go, make them stay’. In a way 'Cup,' like the other songs on the EP, focuses on the danger of turning people into homes, places into people. The song isn’t really personal – it’s universal. It made sense to bring friends into the recording process. I didn’t want to sing this song alone.”
A beautiful, connective message for a beautiful folktronica song. Keep an eye on this talented artist and look for his upcoming EP, available sometime in the near future.
