“Instant Crush” is a cover of Daft Punk’s track from their album Random Access Memories, released in 2013. Cage The Elephant sounds nothing at all like Daft Punk so it’s definitely an interesting cover choice. Cage The Elephant stays true to the song’s strum patterns and melody but they still put their own spin on it. Their version has less clean lines and more grit. The song also features a strong drum presence in typical Cage The Elephant fashion, in addition to an unexpected section of violins. I just recently discovered it was a cover; I had thought it was a new song showing off their mellower side very similar to “Cigarette Daydreams.”
This past July, Cage The Elephant released Unpeeled, a live documentation of the band’s intimate and acoustic tour earlier this year. Unpeeled features tracks recorded live during the “Live & Unpeeled” tour. The album features an hour and twenty minutes of Cage The Elephant classics from each of their albums like “Shake Me Down,” “Cigarette Daydreams,” and “Right Before My Eyes” as well as cheering and singing from live audiences. Unpeeled also features a few covers like “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers, “Whole Wide World” by Wreckless Eric, and of course Daft Punk’s “Instant Crush.”
