An Albany-based singer/songwriter, C.K. Flach brought out his debut album, Empty Mansions, earlier this year. “The Officer” stands out as one of its best tracks, with relevant and insightful lyrics, and a rhythmical percussion background that contrasts with the rest of the album. The track takes up issues including a man’s confrontation with a police officer, which ends violently, and the experience of a woman with the justice system.
The rest of the album offers a mixture of acoustic pop/rock tunes with a touch of folk also noticeable. Flach’s vocals shift from what you here on “the Officer” to the more melodious sounds of Empty Mansions' opening track, “Lazarus.”
The first single was “Boxcar Dreaming,” which deals with the issue of moving on, whether physically leaving home or in a more figurative sense. It has quite a pop anthem feel to it. The strings and piano on this track, and a couple of others, sound a little too over-produced for my liking. Other tracks that left an impression were “Tranquilized” and “Machine Gun,” which showcases Flach’s socially critical lyrics.
Flach began working on his own material in 2016, having previously performed with a band based in the Hudson Valley area. More information about Flach’s music is at his website or you can keep up to date with him on Facebook.
