"Took Me Up" is an ambitious and captivating debut track from Sydney-based singer/producer Buoy.
There's so much going on throughout this song that it really takes a couple of listens before you can digest each layer, each rhythm, and even the structure -- but it's worth the effort.
The partially ambient, wholly experimental track meshes together a myriad rhythms, synths, and various percussive sounds. The vocals steal the spotlight; they alone have a range bigger than most full soundscapes, running from incredibly low, pitch-shifted rumbles to impossibly high falsetto. Every so often, a phrase you could actually identify as a 'melodic line' comes in, giving you a little time to catch your breath -- but only for an instant.
This is Buoy's first single off her forthcoming EP Immersion. Impressive as a first single, I'm interested to see what her next tracks will sound like.
