Recently, I went to a so called hip-hop night at a club, where the said DJ had heard of neither J Dilla nor A Tribe Called Quest. To me, this was like a pop/rock DJ admitting he's never heard of The Beatles or the Beach Boys.
Now, I think it's essential that any real hip hop fans
hear the above artists -- and it appears that Bullion was thinking along the same lines when he made Pet Sounds: In The Key Of Dee back in 2007, which merges the styles of the Beach Boys and Dilla into one. It's almost as if Dilla had sampled the Beach Boys himself.
Since making this album, Bullion has gone on to become a key player in the emerging UK bass scene; it's interesting to see how both two musical legends have influenced a man who has gone on to make music that's pretty different from anything we're hearing today.
