Oooh, but the retro Motown groove and vintage texture of Silk Sonic’s latest is so smooth you could slice it with a butter knife. How could it not be, when it comes from two absolute masters like Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak? While the world was still wrapping their collective head around the duo’s first 70’s-inspired R&B ballad, “Leave the Door Open,” these two groove makers decided to hit us with another loving throwback in the form of “Skate.” While their previous single was reminiscent of early 70’s supergroups such as the Commodores, “Skate” glides forward a few years into disco-era sounds akin to Tavares and even Saturday Night Fever.
If anything, “Skate” proves beyond any doubt that this duo can reproduce the sounds of Motown in a way that is both authentic and contemporary enough for today’s listener. As the second single from their highly anticipated upcoming album, An Evening with Silk Sonic, Mars and .Paak have shown that their ability to couple modern melodies with classic retro rhythms, technique, and instrumentation is what truly sets them apart and cements them as an act to watch.
Buoyant and sunny, this absolute funkfest will make you want to grab a fly honey and sidle on down to the nearest roller rink. You’ll find me there too, hopefully being serenaded by Silk Sonic - even if it’s only in my dreams.
