Oooh, but these are some smooth sounds. While Bruno Mars’ latest album, 24K Magic, was released way back in 2016, and contemporary hip-hop artist Anderson .Paak’s Ventura debuted in 2019 (and both took home several Grammys between them,) the pair have now doubled down and joined forces with a brand new offering for 2021, in the form of their new band, Silk Sonic.
The first single, “Leave the Door Open,” is the perfect mix of vibey soul-funk and jazzy R&B. The duo harmonizes exquisitely throughout the track while complemented by their backing band, creating a slow-jam that brings to mind late-night booty-calls and “you up?” texts sent at 2 AM.
This song is sexy and sensual with none of the smut or drama. An easy song for an easy time, if you will. It’s a retro, 70’s-inspired vintage callback that wouldn’t be out of place playing in the background while two empty glasses of wine sit forgotten about on the coffee table as the evening’s entertainment beckons to you from a shag-pile rug in front of a roaring fire.
The door has been left open, and I’m walking straight through it without a second thought.
“Leave the Door Open” will feature on Silk Sonic’s forthcoming album, A Night With Silk Sonic, due for release later this year.
