Why do we like this?
To me, there is no greater name in American rock history than Bruce Springsteen. The Boss is the epitome of the working class; his poetic lyrics visualize the hardships and romanticism of the American dream through melodic anthems that are made for karaoke. What's more, he has managed to stay relevant for over four decades without having to drastically change his signature sound. As for his live show, I direct your attention here. Not bad for a 63-year-old man.

So whenever a cover of the great man appears, I am always hesitant at first. Springsteen's songs have meant so much to me, and I always fear the integrity and workmanship of his material will be comprised, especially with an iconic track like "Dancing In The Dark." But I must tip my hat to Laura Marling and Eddie Berman. Together, these two give Springsteen's tale of desperation and need for escape added scope with their stripped down version.

Over acoustic guitars, violin and accordion, Marling and Berman's earnest harmonies give off the same sensation of helplessness that Springsteen achieved. While not better than the original, this is the closest a cover has come to matching Springsteen's greatness.
