Why do we like this?
Being a Kiwi, it's hard not to share the excitement for Lorde's recent Pure Heroine release. Not only is it a great album, but she's also helping put New Zealand music on the world map.
There has always been a very healthy local and international music scene in NZ, and my particular fondness for it lies within the dance/electronic genre. For local music, we've got some classic staples like Shapeshifter and The Upbeats, to the more recent sounds of Opiuo and Kimbra. Then there's the newcomers like Lorde and Estere. However, there is another new group that deserve a mention, and they're Broods -- a brother and sister duo from Auckland who've just released a single called "Bridges."
I would describe their sound as synth pop; the track is made up of keyboard melodies, light percussion, and a heavier bass line which gives depth to the chorus. The soft vocals are female-led, however there's a distant male voice that can also be heard throughout. Their sound reminds me of The xx and London Grammar.
Is this the next big thing to come out of our wee country? The patriot in me is hopeful, but I'll wait and see.
