Why do we like this?

The world is a dark and desolate place today. That’s the message at the core of Broken Bells’ newest single, “Good Luck.” Right from the beginning, the lyrics pose existential questions, like in the lines “The face of evil’s on the news tonight / We see the darkness over light / But have we ever really lived in better times?”

The duo is no stranger to alternative songwriting, since it’s made up of the Shins’ vocalist, James Mercer, and producer, Danger Mouse, aka Brian Burton. They got together back in 2009 and have been jamming out for the past decade.

Their latest single includes tons of influences, so it’s hard to give the song an exact. The drums and bass guitar chords keep the beat steady and captivating while the vocals skate higher, building a super cool sound. In a way, it blends today’s indie rock with a '60s hippie vibe.
