During the summer,I barely listen to new music at all. And if I do, it takes a few hours of surfing the net 'till I find something that excites me. Pretty much everyone is hooked on this melancholic synth pop ballad thing these days, and to me it's just old news..not that I have anything against it.
I guess this is the exact reason why Brody Dalle's "Don't Mess With Me" (debut single from her new album Diploid Love) felt like the right kind of rebellion. Even though I have to admit that the first versus doesn't sound very catchy, the chorus is as sweet as the punk-rock was ten years ago, and it gets stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
As Dalle said herself, this song just takes off on its own. The tendency to overthink the sound and ruin the flow is one of the biggest weeds in today's music industry. It's nice to hear that Dalle isn't going down that path.
The single itself is really lively and serves as a perfect comeback track for the fans. You can actually hear the mix of The Distillers and Spinnerette –a perfect match for a perfect rock'n'roll track.
Dalle is back and she's never been this fierce. I guarantee you, it's a great start to something new!
