Why do we like this?
Mmm, do you feel that heat? That's the slow-building, red-hot burn of this oh-so-classic bedroom blues number "When My Man Comes Home." Brittany Howard, of the Alabama Shakes, teams up with Ruby Amanfu, a Ghanian-born singer-songwriter, for this undeniably sexy tune, one that belongs in an old school gin joint piano bar, or at the very least on a turntable.
Howard may have blown our collective minds with the growling, epic power of her belting singing style, but here, she slows it down, turning that growl into a purr. Amanfu, who recently appeared on Jack White's Bluderbuss, lends a lovely lilting quality to the vocals. Both are backed by the gentle chugalug of blues-beat guitar, organ, and a piano that talks as much as it accompanies.
They're not reinventing the wheel with this one, but man, do they make what's old sound new again.
