Despite describing his music as“grab your turtleneck and meet me in the garden + vibe folk” on Soundcloud(the sort of oddly specific humor exclusive to Gen-Z artists who grew up on subtweets and TikTok humor), Boy Willows proved he had a pop sensibility last time he was on Indie Shuffle. With a mxmtoon-redolent ukulele and silk-gentle vocals, “I Love It When You Talk” was easy to swoon for and even easier to groove to.
“Fila,”finds itself on the opposite side of the danceability spectrum: a lo-fi pop haze to listen to under satin sheets, a morning caress on your shoulder, sunlight filtering through the window pane. There’s room for more than one in this bed, and Boy Willows shares it generously with Wallows' frontman, Dylan Minette. The baton pass between verses is perfect; their timbres different yet complementary. However, “Fila” is still Boy Willows’, the work of an artist who knows his audience and his meme: “I’m back in the saddle, yeehaw/ Girls who say that, also wear Fila.”
