While the debut full-length album from BOOTS is yet to be released, Jordy Asher is anything but a music scene newbie. A key producer of Beyonce’s critically acclaimed self-titled album Beyonce, Asher is back as BOOTS and ready for his own turn to bask in the spotlight.
One of his first singles, “Mercy,” opens with soft, emotionally-charged vocals accompanied only by a quiet strum of a guitar. The song gradually builds, slowly introducing additional instruments to add a bit more dimension. All of a sudden, WHAM. An electric guitar abruptly interrupts the soft crooning, transforming the song into an upbeat, garage rock ballad. Perhaps unconventional to introduce such a vibrant chorus until the song is nearly complete, but we’re digging it.
“Mercy” is included on a soundtrack that accompanies the short film Motorcycle Jesus, conceptualized and produced by Asher. His first full-length album, AQUΛRIA, drops on 11/13. NPR has already deemed him “one of the most interesting artists of 2015” so we are eager to see what else he has in store for us.
