I was introduced to Melbourne artist Boats last year with his debut single "Spider's Soul." Emotive and expansive, it was the result of a guy who had spent years DJing in the electronic scene before deciding to explore a more organic, instrumental sound.
New single "Shallows" has an ambient base, with a soothing rhythm that gently waxes and wanes throughout the atmospheric sound. The tones are warm and inviting, slowly but surely building with a beat and additional instrumental layers. It's one of those songs that truly manages to mesmerize and transport the listener to a completely new, tranquil environment.
It's rare to find an artist with the kind of genuine talent that so clearly shines through a mere two singles -- but Boats, real name Blake Paterson, is one of them.
Boats' debut EP, Release, has been produced by Rat & Co's Joshua Delaney and will be out on April 17.
