A blogger friend (cheers Huw!) of mine sent Boatfriends my way a few weeks back, declaring them as "his new favorite band." He's usually pretty on-point with his suggestions, so I immediately started listening, and quickly agreed with his assessment of the Melbourne/Newcastle-based outfit.
Founding members Shanna Watson and Clinton Edwards have already shared the stage with the likes of Neon Indian and Chet Faker, and they've just added drummer Sam Peterson to their ranks.
Despite their obvious talent, Boatfriends remain relatively unknown locally (a trend I do not see continuing!). With the upcoming release of their debut EP, they've just dropped its second single "Hands Up To The Light" (check out earlier release "Kaleido"). Wistful is a word I'd use to describe this dream-wave track, with Watson's haunting tones lingering above layers of washed out synth and lethargic percussion.
Thanks for the tip, Huw (check out his website if you're interested)!
