Sounds like:
Madlib,
Kendrick Lamar,
Vince Staples
Why do we like this?
The West Coast is experiencing a multifaceted musical resurgence in the last half decade. From jazz to gangster rap to funk and back to beats and underground hip-hop, it's CA all day. While folks like Kendrick and YG are reviving the presence of street culture from the West in rap through major outlets, hometown hero Blu is making a sharp turn left, as usual.
Good To Be Home is Blu's upcoming double album -- yes double album -- paying homage to the conglomerate of cities, neighborhoods and streets that make up Los Angeles. Completely produced by Bombay, Blu's described the album as a "love letter" to the West. First few leaks, "Rap Dope" and "Summertime," have been G-funky cuts, slathered with bass and lyricism that treats words and phrases like Charlie Parker riffs.
"The West," the LP's first official single, carries on tradition, banging in your trunk with dense rapping. The album comes out late May, and I'm infinitely curious to see where this goes.
