10 years ago, Blu & Exile released their debut mixtape Below the Heavens, an immediate underground hit. But, as it goes with too many breakout stars, that magic was short lived and hard to recreate. Besides an unremarkable 2012 release, Blu & Exile have stayed quiet over the last decade, while Below the Heavens has lived on as an underground cult classic.
So when I heard they had an announced a new album, I was wary – until I read it’s only a compilation of unreleased tracks recorded in 2007 that didn’t make the Below the Heavens tracklist.
The first of these singles to be released was "Constellation," which could not sound more 2007 (just in the sing-songy chorus alone). For the duration of the song, I let the cool nostalgia wash over me, bringing me back to my days of rap message boards and Limewire downloads. Ah, what simpler times.
