Why do we like this?
After the spectacular "Sunday's Best/Monday's Worst," Black Milk finally begins speaking on his upcoming solo album, No Poison, No Paradise. Dropping later this fall, the album should be expanding on the deeply soulful musicality of the first two leaks, the aforementioned track and a new one, "Perfected On Puritan Ave."
Black's newest track continues the MC/producer's pairing of narratives with rich hip-hop. "Puritan Ave." takes us from neighborhood basketball games to first experience with loss and initial success with rap. Though Black's growth as an MC should be recognized, as always, the star of the show is the music. More than a drum loop and a sample, Black stretches hip-hop to accommodate live instrumentation and experimentation without sacrificing the spirit of the work.
One of my favorite parts of the song is the reprise that occurs a few minutes into the track. The song re-imagines itself as a free jazz-hip-hop hybrid before returning to its original form. No Poison, No Paradise will be released on October 15, in the middle of Black Milk's nationwide tour with Quelle Chris and DJ Sober 1.
