Austin's best kept secret isn't written in a little black book - it's the band Black Books, and today they release their sophomore album Can't Even. This single is a great example of why it's so darn good.
Like the best southern things, "Golden OK" is homemade. The band’s guitarist, songwriter, and producer, Kevin Butler (Reddening West), hosted much of the album's recording, mixing and mastering at his home studio, Test Tube Audio, which has become the band's long-time space.
The result is a modern marvel. Ross Gilfillan's lead vocals blend seamlessly with the grounded but dreamy indie pop rock made up of guitar, synth, samples, and multiple drum kits. The harmonies created by band members are lush, on point and push the important instrumental moments to new emotional heights.
The best way to experience this tune is with good headphones and eyes closed - like they sing: "just close your eyes and make it go away."
Black Books is Kevin Butler, Ross Gilfillan, Clarke Curtis, Mike Parker, Cameron Smith and Matt Toman.
