Montreal's own Black Atlass is doing me under. I think I go a little insane when I listen to this track, because it's just that good. And even though I know the song is around a year old now, I can't get it out of my head.
Black Atlass was featured just this last week as Vogue's Artist of the Week, with his other track titled "Paris" as the highlight. As stated within Vogue's article, Black Atlass (aka Alex Fleming) wanted to "clash elegant-sounding piano and vocal melodies with large-sounding gritty synths, hip-hop"“inspired drums, and R&B"“themed lyrics."
Similarly within "Castles," Fleming states that his music flows so naturally because it arises subconsciously. Indeed, the song values the lo-fi properties a bass line can offer, with percussion that remains blown out and focalized.
"It's a hard thing to describe, but when you really love and are really passionate about something... it's almost as though you don't have a choice and you don't even realize it."
