Birdy is one of my all-time favorite vocalists. I let out a high-pitched squeal whenever I see she has a new song out, and I'm happy to say “Island Lights” is worth the excitement.
The singer’s voice is so chock full of emotion, that it overflows. her voice skates up higher than I ever thought it could, and the notes burst out like a loud whisper. Birdy only has a piano at her side to accompany her, and frankly, that’s all she needs.
However, when you take a step back from her delicate vocals, you begin to notice the lyrics. I googled and scanned through them while listening to the song, soaking up her poetic verses. Honestly, they belong in an anthology, especially the lines, “You are my song and my silence / The only one I confide in / You are my sun and this winter never thaws / Nothing seems to grow here.”
Long story short, if you’ve ever had to deal with a hurtful breakup, this song will be quite the journey.
