Conceived in 2008, Big Gigantic is the pièce de résistance of Boulder, Colorado's saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salkan. Big Gigantic has really blown up on the scene lately, going from club gigs to major festivals, playing with Bassnectar, and opening for STS9 (among others), and I can see why. The duo's passionate talent is undeniable.
Lalli and Salkan have taken electronic music to another level, combining a DJ set with live band through burning jazz melodies and bass lines that will send you straight to the dance floor. Big Gigantic's latest album, A Place Behind The Moon, is a crystal-clear embodiment of the duo's mastered vision and previous productions to date.
The best part? A Place Behind The Moon is available for free download, and is also available for purchase on iTunes, which includes higher quality mp3s as well as a bonus track featuring a first-time studio collaboration with STS9. This is another reason I salute Big Gigantic, free love!
Almost naturally, A Place Behind The Moon peels back the layers of electronic music to something deeper, combining saxophone and abstract drum rhythms with a fascinating electronic atmosphere. Setting the tone, the first track "Looking Back" gears up for the intensity to come, while the next two tracks, "Sky High" and "Lucid Dreams," showcase this gradual beat-build.
You'll have to listen for yourself, but there's something hypnotic and ethereal to A Place Behind The Moon, as well as all of Big Gigantic's productions, that really makes the album title come to life. So get your moon boots on, folks! Godspeed on your journey to A Place Behind The Moon.
