Under the name Bibio, Stephen Wilkinson has garnered somewhat of a cult following and become a quiet kind of royalty along the likes of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Mount Kimbie in the electronica scene.
This song, an edit of the original song almost three times its length, is taken from new album Phantom Brickworks and signifies a shift away from the so-called 'IDM' of his previous work into a more ambient and minimalist domain.
The track itself sustains the vague sense of structure that its title alludes to. A fluttering piano that gives the impression of a repeated motif that is never fully realized provides gentle sketch-work that is softly colored-in with hazy drones and choral samples.
It's a pretty thing that meanders along, slowly filling the spaces between everything carrying you there with it, in the way all great ambient music should. Phantom Brickworks is out now through Warp Records.
