Why do we like this?
With SXSW2014 this week, parades of musical acts have emerged with their minds on using the festival as a launching pad to greater exposure and acclaim.
None are more deserving -- or perhaps even as exciting -- than Best Revenge, the latest project from guitarist Keaton Simons (Gnarls Barkley, Snoop Dogg) and drummer Deantoni Parks (The Mars Volta, Bosnian Rainbows).
Their first produced track together, "Brother Blue," was released this week in conjunction with the duo's debut in Austin. From this sneak peak, Best Revenge promises to be a gritty yet eclectic collaboration between two true students of music.
"Brother Blue" kicks off with the peculiar menace of a 80s film score. It soon devolves into a sneering rockabilly track, lacerating the listener with both a swaggering guitar and bold, vocal machismo. The lyrics convey wisdom through hurt, and Parks' drums throb with the pulse of reckoning. This is an accessible song with an authentic blues rock mentality. Stevie Ray Vaughn would be proud.
The soul of the track suggests man at a crossroads, which is fitting given the respective musical resumes of both Simons and Parks, journeymen who find themselves doing something that is new and fresh with Best Revenge. There is synergy between the two performers on "Brother Blue." Hopefully the rest of Best Revenge will match the song's musical vow to re-launch the greatness of rockabilly and raw American blues on the current soundscape. You don't hear a new track like this often.
