Why do we like this?
I can be iffy about pop music, especially surfer/pop records. This may have something to do with my aversion to anything that is bright and sunny, and my innate jealousy towards Californians. As much as I don't want to admit it, I love Best Coast in all its pop, doo-wop glory. Bethany Cosentino (AKA Pocohaunted and now Best Coast) began recording songs at 17, and after being frightened by attention from major record labels (a hipster's worst fear!!), she decided to go from making typical boring pop music to pop music about smoking weed and wanting to make out with boys. I kinda dig her for that. I also like her for making one of the best albums this summer, for the summer.
"Boyfriend" seems to be leading the Best Coast craze, a catchy upbeat tune about, well, wanting a boyfriend. (One downside is that her music isn't that complex.) One of my other favorites is called "When I'm With You," a lo-fi diddy about being with the one you love, seems strangely sarcastic in its angsty uptempo beat and snarkily-sung lyrics. The thing I love about these songs is how gloriously teen bop they are, with every pock mark, sophomoric remark, and sarcastic sideways glance.
If you're looking for music that will change you, for music that is inspiring, and almost artistic in its lyricism, don't look here. However, if you're looking for music that you can play in your dad's old hatchback while smoking weed on I-405, Best Coast's got your back.
