German DJ and producer Benedikt Frey returns to label ESP Institute for his debut LP Artificial. After a releasing a full length LP as one half of duo INIT on John Talabot’s label Hivern Discs, Frey’s full length debut is an exploration of live electronic rhythms, abstract arrangements and deep, meditative beats.
Artificial is dance floor focused, bounding on the outskirts of dub-techno but still maintaining a warm and spacious condition. The dub-resemblance grows through the acidic bassline that sharpens towards the tracks crescendo. “H For Hysteria” is reminiscent of Jamie XX taking The XX’s live show for his 5 minutes of techno indulgence, pushing the audience deeper to highlight the contrast in their music, only here there is no release as Frey steers the listener towards a place of 'pure ecstasy, no regret.'
Artificial is due for release in September, you can hear more here.
