Perth band Bastian's Happy Flight were clearly born in the wrong era. Aside from their name being a clear nod to classic 80s flick The Never Ending Story, their music draws heavy influence from the disco-friendly decade. The released their debut EP, EP01, back in 2011, and dropped a few singles over the past 12 months in the lead-up to their second EP (which is due out later this year) including the pop overload "RELATIONSHIPDENIAL."
Their latest release "Hooray..." doesn't differ too much from the formula. In fact, you can almost hear Phil Collins in the track's opening! Beginning slowly, it really takes off when the chorus hits -- with expansive percussion, vocals and synth taking control. They live up to their own classification of "melodramatic pop" with a few hero guitar solos and a truly epic breakdown around the four-minute mark, before slowing down during the somewhat measured outro.
Whatever their influences, what Bastian's Happy Flight provide the listener is a whole lot of fun. While they're clearly very talented, their most endearing feature is the fact that they don't take themselves too seriously. Well done, dudes.
