Melbourne artist Banoffee has been putting out some of the most interesting female-fronted electro-pop in Australia today. She's got a new EP coming out, and "With Her" is our first taste of what's to come.
There's a real sentimentality and sadness throughout the track. On an emotional level, there's so much depth, delivered with delicate caution. The lyrics paint a serene, somber portrait of a broken relationship. "Every time I saw you on the street, I thought you were with me, you were with her," she sings, with melancholy resolve.
On a musical level, the simplicity and subtleties make this track. Dainty vocals are perched atop gentle piano chords, while a distant beat flitters in and out, slowly building up a syncopated rhythm. Later, vocal loops whisper lyrical rhythms, creating a soft atmosphere that blends beautifully with the ambient under-layers.
"With Her" will feature on Banoffee's upcoming EP, due out in the coming months.
