Why do we like this?
I first cottoned on to Loston when his excellent rework of James Blake's "Retrograde" was posted here on Indie Shuffle in September last year. Since then, he's lent his talents to songs by Drake and Sampha, and now he's dropped a rework of Banks' "Waiting Game."
It's perhaps his most minimalist interpretation yet, almost entirely ignoring the lead vocals of the original and letting the backing vocals carry the song through bursts of pulsating bass and synth. Despite the different direction Loston takes, though, he still manages to preserve the darkness and despair of the original.
I think the surprise energy in Loston's version of "Retrograde" keeps it as my favorite of his for now, but those looking for something a bit more relaxed will not be disappointed with this latest effort.
