BADBADNOTGOOD have got a rep for dark jazz-infused instrumental hip-hop so I was kinda surprised when I heard this cover of Andy Shauf’s “To You,” a playful indie pop number that narrates a dude inviting his crush out for a smoke to share his feelings with him. Though it’s a Canadian band covering a Canadian artist, so no surprise there.
Featured on BADBADNOTGOOD’s Late Night Tales session, the exclusive cover drops the vocals for synths, muted guitar, and exotic percussion, building with bass, strings, and keyboard. It’s reflective and intimate — definitely one for night drives, aimless walks, and putting on a mixtape for your guy/girl.
The rest of the compilation has features from River Tiber, Daniel Caesar, and Charlotte Day Wilson, to name a few. In the spirit of Indie Shuffle, the band states that:
Every track on this comp was either shown to us by an incredible person or made by one of our friends. These artists, as well as many, many others, have influenced us to create and kept our deep love of music alive.”
Love it.
