The first time I heard Bad Bad Hats live was in the living room of a stranger's house in Minneapolis. The two were playing an acoustic set with ukulele and makeshift percussion -- and I loved every second of it. It hurt so good.
In the five years since, Kerry Alexander and Chris Hoge haven't changed a single thing that works so well for them. They may have recently lost their bassist Noah Boswell to graduate school, and gained multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Connor Davison, but nothing is going to stop them. An EP, several singles, and two albums later, the duo is finally making a splash worthy of their talents with the tunes -- like this one -- off their latest LP, Lightning Round.
"Write It On Your Heart" is as earnest as it gets, mixing genuine lyrics with sweet, lighthearted indie rock instrumentals. Alexander's upbeat take on a sad and sentimental subject matter is her specialty, as she croons, "Write it on your heart, dear / You were never mine." Yet it's a feel good track that can fill up a room, and make your day all in less than three minutes.
