Swedish-Iranian singer Ayelle's latest single "Reclaim" boasts more than just an ear-pleasing melody and her mellifluous voice. The dark R&B feel of this one sits below a heavy message of putting a man's needs ahead of your own in a relationship.
"Reclaim" is an indictment of traditional gender roles and an acknowledgement of their impact on our behavior. In her words:
“I wrote this track about living in the shadow of a man, where his needs take center stage and you morph into the accommodating girlfriend. It’s something that’s perpetuated by social norms, which makes it easy to fall into, but harder to get out of.”
While the track may act as a harbinger, Ayelle delivers it in a tactful way. It's surreptitiously sultry and sharp, and I'm glad to see a musician using her voice to perpetuate a message of awareness. Check out more of her music here.
