When you talk about concept-driven acts, these guys take the cake. Sydney duo atOlla (Matilda Stephanie Paget and James Santos) have conceptualized themselves on "a love story about a man who drowns at sea, and is brought back to life by deep-sea dwelling bioluminescent jellyfish." From the mystical live show to their musical concepts to their overall look, everything is tied together to perfection in a fantastical package.
However, all this backstory would be completely wasted if the end product, the music, was not up to scratch. They've released two EPs over the past few months, Ophelia and Ayapaneco, and with another on the way, they've been steadily developing a name for themselves.
Current single "Ayapaneco" is a great representation of what atOlla is all about, a dark, quirky electronic-driven track topped off with Paget's haunting vocals. The duo cite Crystal Castles and Neon Indian as references, and I'm sure you'll find elements of both in this one.
Keep an eye out for the third EP in their series, Lucille, due out shortly. And make sure you check out their previous released on SoundCloud.
