Arundel is an interesting group; their make-up is quite unique and their music follows suit. The brain-child of Brisbane musician Lucas Arundell, the group has developed into a 5-piece over the years and already have a couple of EPs to their name (2010's
Nature Strip and
Olive Caves in 2012).
While the band spent 2013 planning their next move, today Indie Shuffle are pleased to bring you the first taste of what to expect on Arundel's third EP with the premiere of its first single "Chimpanzee."
On the song, layer upon layer of synth, percussion and sampling is pieced together to create a pretty distinctive soundscape. This is a track that weights many components perfectly, favoring neither vocals or instrumentation.
Vocally, we're also treated to a unique formula, where the interplay between Claire Whiting, Lucas Arundell, and Simon Crossley's very different vocal approaches mesh perfectly (especially toward the end when they really play off each other). With so many different elements making up "Chimpanzee," lesser musicians would fall into the trap of over complicating things, but this is where Arundel do their finest work.
The single has been released with an accompanying video which you can enjoy here first. The full EP is scheduled for April, but you can catch up with Arundel's past works on their
Soundcloud.
