Why do we like this?

Apidae is the collaborative project between multi-instrumentalist Greg Hummell and producer/vocalist Drew JH York. "Turning Tides" is their breathtaking debut release.

As always, I love the combination of live and electronic instrumentation, and this track has it all. From rich, emotive vocals to glitchy synths, from a slick syncopated beat to a deep, wistful bass, I'm really captivated by each layer.

Opening with drawn-out vocals and subtle synths, we're instantly brought into an ethereal, resonant environment. As it begins to build, vocal harmonies and organs add splashes of color while the rhythm and bass round out the soundscape.

The long, falsetto vocals above the snappy percussive rhythms give off a Radiohead vibe, while the frantic synth runs are more of a Four Tet move. While the track certainly wears its heart on its sleeve, the obvious influences have combined really nicely.

"Turning Tides" will be officially released on February 9 through Swedish label Dumont Dumont..
