Why do we like this?
Aphex Twin has had a role in advancing electronic music, but even with that in mind, his best known track "Windowlicker" is still mind-blowing.
Why? It was released in 1999, despite the fact it would sound out of place on the more avant-garde/experimental edges of the modern dubstep movement. Second, Aphex Twin managed to get something this experimental into the Top 20 in the UK; bare in mind the B-Side is titled "(ΔMÄ«¹=αΣDi[n][ΣFij[n-1]+FextinÌ„¹)" and "Windowlicker" itself has sounds in created using a Spectogram generator.
Drawing on a multitude of sounds and ideas, what makes this track special is that they are coherently joined together - there is still a meaningful body of work built around (or even despite) the experimental nature of the track.
Although most of our Old School Wednesdays have been pretty influential, this one's echoes can still be heard loud and clear 13 years later.
