Why do we like this?
Andrew Bird is an incredibly charming human being to begin with, so hearing his live rendition of "It's Not Easy Being Green" just makes me want to puke (in a great way). On top of that, if I were to hear a human cover this song instead of Kermit, I can't think of anyone else besides Mr. Bird.
With this track, he's going back to his jazz roots, which evokes a bittersweet nostalgic flashback, when things in Birdland were a bit simpler and less layered. It's just his classic voice, an acoustic guitar, and smooth jazz drums. Andrew had this to add about covering this classic:
This song literally made me feel warm and fuzzy inside (hence the puke comment). His translation of the lovable green frog's signature song was executed in a delectably delicate way. The live audience and their swooning chuckles add a lovable vibe, and I can only imagine the vibe in the room when he was gracefully enthralling his audience with this well-known classic.
If Andrew Bird decides to leave his music career behind, I see a bright future for him in puppeteering.

"The song shows us how to celebrate what makes us different, even indulge some delusions of grandeur, but in the end temper them with humility. I think this song appears in both The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. The Muppet Show was what really excited me as a kid. Kermit really owns this song, so I felt kind of funny covering it. Maybe I chose it for the challenge of taking it away from him for a moment, so we can see what a great piece of writing it is. It's also fun to play the old jazz stuff again."
