Why do we like this?
The feeling just before giving into uncertainty. That suspended sigh held in the space between thinking no and saying yes, when desire threatens to spill over doubt and consume you. If the original version of Alicia Key's "Unthinkable" is that moment, then Fwdslxsh's remix is the release and relief that follows. Smooth and serene. Let go.
Fwdslxsh (pronounced "forward slash") is the moniker of Yinka Bankole, a London-based beatmaker with an ear for future sounds. He is a member of the art collective Last Night in Paris and is only 19 years young. Prodigy alert! Fwdslxsh has always had a strong taste for music, but it was only a year ago that he took his first shot as producing it. Since then, he's remixed and produced a solid repertoire of tracks, marked by R&B vocal samples and ambient instrumentals.
In this remix, the confessional lyrics are hushed into wisps of gentle breathy echoes. The original becomes but a memory, cushioned between atmospheric layers of soft percussion, lush blends and swirling harmonies. Beneath it all, the faintest static crinkles and crawls. Absolutely lovely.
Definitely keep an eye on Fwdslxsh. This is only the beginning.
