The heart-wrenching potency of hauntingly detached vocals and delicately minimalistic instrumental accompaniment have produced formidable genre juggernauts like James Blake and Bon Iver, and fresh-faced Albin Lee Meldau is in line to capitalize on the very same spine-tingling auditory trademarks.
What looks set to stand in the Swede’s favor, however, is his lack of inclination to embellish his work with heavy vocal distortion or electronic elements- an authenticity most likely garnered during a background of busking and church performances. Indeed, in the case of vocals which lie somewhere on the spectrum between Hozier and Nina Simone, there is no need for bells and whistles beyond this track’s use of velvety harmonies and Clapton-like acoustic guitar plucking.
While "Lou Lou" leans more toward the stripped-down side of the Lovers EP, the rest of the repertoire is by no means gaudy or deviant from the track’s elegance, creating a powerful springboard for Meldau’s solo career as a very necessary feature in the singer-songwriter landscape.
