Why do we like this?
Alaska In Winter is by no means a new band, but if you haven't heard of them then it's high time you start listening. Frontman Brandon Bethancourt supposedly "spent a semester in a tiny cabin out in the middle of nowhere Alaska recording music on a laptop during the winter" -- hence the name. Recording in a cabin... sound familiar? It's definitely a key ingredient if you're going to put out a successful album.
Dance Party in the Balkans, their debut album released in March 2008, also features Beirut's Zach Condon on trumpet and ukulele; you can tell from the sound that Bethancourt took influences from Condon. The song "Close Your Eyes - We Are Blind" is probably the best example of their collaboration.
Alaska In Winter remixed the version of the song (featured as today's Bonus track) on their second album, Holiday, giving the song a little more edge and beat.

Unfortunately, after releasing his third album earlier this year, Space Eagle (the motion picture soundtrack), Bethancourt started suffering from extreme depression and was on the verge of suicide; he wrote an open letter to his fans on his website, saying that he wants to continue making music again and is headed back to the studio. No word on when a new release is slated, but here's hoping that he makes a full recovery soon.
